Do I Really Need a Digital Marketer?

“I am pretty sure my 12-year-old nephew could do it for like, 20 bucks a month.” 

There it was, the entirety of my business, my passion, my hours upon hours, of study, testing, and perfecting my craft, reduced to something a 12-year-old could do, at a monthly rate of less than it costs to see a movie.

They were the first words out of Ron’s* mouth when I met with him, from the start I could see this was going to be an interesting meeting. Ron has the personality type people often refer to as “blunt” because calling him pig headed might seem rude. He had worked hard all his life and loved his little business. 

Our meeting had been arranged by his secretary, who was trying to drag Ron kicking and screaming into the digital age, he was putting up a fight. Ron had a Facebook page for the business, but he never posted anything, his website, well let’s say if it were a competition, his website probably wouldn’t even receive a participation trophy. Blogs, search engine rankings, youtube videos, all meant nothing to Ron, he didn’t know about it, and he didn’t want to know. Despite all this, I could tell I would like Ron, he spoke his mind, and he was switched on, the only reason he didn’t want digital marketing was because no one had explained it to him adequately.

“Well if that is the case, I will hire him for $40 a month and still charge you my usual fee.” Ron had a chuckle, and with that, I started to explain why he needed a digital marketer. I figured it might provide some helpful information to you all as well.

1. We don’t just know what to say; we know how to say it.

 

Imagine you are at a bar with a friend, at the other end of the bar is the woman of your dreams, she looks at you and smiles. You know you are a great catch, in your head you list everything about you that makes you great. 

You decide to introduce yourself, standing up you walk toward her, the closer you get, the more nervous you become, you don’t want to mess this up, she is the woman of your dreams. You get closer. Your mind becomes more muddled; you keep trying to remind yourself how great you are. Before you know it, you are standing in front of her, she looks up and smiles at you, there are a few seconds of awkwardness before you manage to blurt out

“Marry Me”. You see the look of shock on her face only seconds before feeling the burning sting of pepper spray. She was less than impressed. You go back to your friend, embarrassed, defeated, and partially blind.

 

This is how most businesses run, they know they offer excellent service, great products, great everything, but they don’t know how to present that in a way that avoids them getting pepper sprayed.

 

Let’s go back to the bar, you are with your same friend, coincidently the girl of your dreams is there again, well, you are pretty sure it is her, your eyes are still recovering from the pepper spray, but if you squint it looks like her, either that or a beautiful shrub. You work up your courage to speak to her again, as you stand up, your friend grabs you, “let me handle this for you.”

You sit back and watch as our friend sends her a drink with a note apparently from you. She looks up but is still wary. He sends another drink and note from “you”, this time she laughs. 

He approaches her. You can hear him talking about you, “… I kid you not; he saved everyone in the orphanage, even the two-legged dog, Wheels.” His words are engaging her, the more he speaks, the more she looks over at you. Your friend is not nervous. He knows just what to say, how to say it, and when, her interest in you is increasing. Eventually, she gets tired of looking, right then your friend says “would you like to meet him?” Before he finishes his sentence, she has clicked the buy now button, she approaches you,  introduces herself, and you live happily ever after.

 

That is how a digital marketer can help you, we make sure the hard work is done, so when it gets to the point the customer is talking to you, they are all set to push the buy now button.

 

 

 

2. Time

We all need more of it, running a business keeps you flat out all day, and that is just with the day to day stuff. On top of that, you now need to find time to develop a digital marketing plan, create relevant content, keep up to date with what is happening in your industry. Write a blog, engage with your customers over social media, record a video, handle any complaints, create a landing page or two, and review your analytics, that is just the start of digital marketing.

 

To do it all correctly, you would be looking at 20 – 30 hours a week, on top of the already 50 – 60 that you already do. Not to mention the hours it would take getting the marketing right, so it is useful. This creates a somewhat lopsided work-life balance, sure your business might be successful, but at what cost?  Your stress levels would increase, and you would begin to lose focus.

 

Digital marketers handle all that for you, so you can focus on the vital parts of running a successful business, and spending time enjoying life.

 

3. Cost

The cost involved in doing your own digital marketing can be high, especially if you don’t have any experience, to begin with. There are training courses to be done, programs to buy to be more efficient. As mentioned before there is time, how much is your time worth, every minute spent doing digital marketing, is minute being taken away from another aspect of the business.

 

There is also the issue of driving some customers away due to not being able to market correctly from the start; this can prove to be a costly issue.

 

Digital marketers can keep your costs low, many of us already have the software, and have been through the training. You are billed for the hours used, not the time in between which makes hiring a freelance digital marketer cheaper than putting one on staff.

Although there may seem like a hefty outlaw, any digital marketer worth their salt will provide an excellent ROI.
